The seventh pick of our series is the Church of the Sacred Heart, conveniently located between the Orchard Road and the Fort Canning Park, was designed by French missionary priest and architect, Fr. Louis Lambert in the French Baroque style.

In 1910, as the Chinese Catholic community was growing rapidly, this church opened its doors with the aim of serving the Cantonese and Hakka speaking faithful of Singapore. The construction of this church made possible with the help of wealthy Chinese benefactors, who purchased and donated the land to the church, along with the stained glass panels, teak pews, baptismal font, and the church’s central altar, all of which are still in use today.

Even after sustaining damage from artillery fire during the Japanese invasion on 15 February 1942, the church still retains its beauty with careful renovations and restorations carried out through the years.

Lit with warm lights, and with walls painted in warmer tones, the church exudes a cosy, and welcoming atmosphere for visitors and faithful alike.

Besides the breathtaking architecture and the rich history of the church, there is a deeper reason why we recommend this church as an ideal place for the celebration of the sacrament of matrimony.

With the church being dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and drawing from the wisdom of Pope Benedict XVI who once said,

“In biblical language, ‘heart’ indicates the centre of the person where his sentiments and intentions dwell. In the Heart of the Redeemer we adore God’s love for humanity, his will for universal salvation, his infinite mercy. Practising devotion to the Sacred Heart of Christ therefore means adoring that Heart which, after having loved us to the end, was pierced by a spear and from high on the Cross poured out blood and water, an inexhaustible source of new life”. -Benedict XVI, Angelus 5 June 2005

This would be a most sacred and fitting setting for a man and a woman, who in the presence of God, family and friends, give themselves in marriage to one another with hearts ready to love as Christ does.

Here is a prayer for Consecration of your Marriage to the Heart of Jesus through the Heart of Mary.
